Krik? Krak!: A call and response in some Haitian villages between a storyteller and their audience.

CCB is planning our next virtual popup exhibit, "Krik? Krak!" and we want you! All visual and performative artists are welcome to apply. Applications are due by March 27th, with all chosen artists to be notified by April 1st.

Stories have been used in various ways throughout history. There's folklore that is meant to frighten and entertain. Cautionary tales that are used to guide and teach through grizzly consequences. Other stories are used to draw out emotion and can inspire one to confront a conflict with the world or with oneself. Growth and healing can be sparked by these ancestral tales.

No matter our journeys, we all have at least one story that has left a great impact on our lives. A story that has shaped our view of the world around us and ourselves. That taught us how to tell right from wrong and keep our loved ones safe. Whether through song, paint, dance, and poetry, Creatives of Color Boston wants to share your stories!

This virtual event will include a panel on Friday, May 14th, followed by an exhibition showcase on Saturday, May 15th.

Artists will be responsible for the supplies needed for the work being submitted.

You'll have the opportunity to get to know some of the most talented artists in the Greater Boston area as they perform, discuss their art, talk about upcoming projects, or even take you on a tour thru their creative makerspaces. Last but not least, introducing the wonderful JennyMae Kho!

JennyMae Kho (they/them/theirs) is a Boston-based writer, musician, multidisciplinary artist, and founder of The Dreamland Project, a multi-media vehicle that elevates the stories of the unheard and underrepresented. Their work explores the intersections of science, art, imagination, and identity. They have experimented across a range of mediums, and have brought together image, sound, and language in installations, projections, and compositions. JennyMae is currently exploring decolonization, indigenization, and the reclamation of cultural identity in the face of internalized oppression. They are also interested in how shared experiences can contribute to the development of greater empathy. JennyMae attended Emerson College for an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Winding down our Bundok | Mountain panel spotlights, we are very happy to introduce you to Amanda Bravo! 

​Amanda (She/Her/Hers) is Nuyorican graduate from Lesley University with a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a specialization in Dance Movement Therapy. Her culturally responsive approach to the arts in healing heavily influences her work as a Family Clinician at Compass, Yo Soy LOLA's Artistic Director, and Artist & Community Partner at AuthenticallyBravo. When not serving in those capacities, Amanda enjoys dabbling in the arts and crafts, making those around her laugh, and playing with as many dogs as possible!

Our next amazing panelist for Bundok | Mountain: A Virtual Panel on Inter-generational Healing is, Leslie Condon!

Leslie Anne Condon (she/her/hers) is a Boston-area visual artist, seasoned arts administrator, and emerging arts scholar. Her artwork explores the intersections between visual culture, social ritual, and global consumer culture. She is interested in Critical Race Art History and issues of representation in the arts. Leslie primarily works in graphite and charcoal or various three-dimensional mediums. She earned a Post Baccalaureate in Fine Art 3D from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011.

Very excited to introduce yet another amazing panelist for Bundok | Mountain: A Virtual Panel on Inter-generational Healing to you: J. Cottle!

J.Cottle B.A, M.Ed, (He, Him, His) is an educator, arts –administrator, musician and writer and is the Founder/Executive Director of Dunamis. He has worked as an arts-educator at the Boston Arts Academy, Dorchester Academy, Boston University/ Malden Public Schools Reach For The Stars Academy, and BELL. As an arts-administrator he has supported the Community Music Center of Boston, BPS Performing Arts Department, and the Berklee College of Music. J's work specializes in designing curriculum and O.S.T-programs using integrated arts-techniques and youth development practices to facilitate transformative growth. J is a 2019 National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellow.

Leading up to our virtual panel for Bundok | Mountain on May 2nd, we'd like to introduce you all to each of our panelists. First up, Maria Servellon!

Maria Servellón is an award-winning filmmaker, multimedia artist, educator, and arts advocate from Boston, MA. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Japanese from the University of Massachusetts Boston, and her Master of Fine Arts in Film and Media Art from Emerson College. Her focus is film and digital media, including projection, installation, photography, drawing, and design.

Maria's work often explores synesthetic relationships between art, music, and dance. Her work has exhibited and screened in Boston, New York, California, Oregon, UK, and Mexico thus far.
​
Maria's latest and most successful short film is Hyphen (2018). Within the last 3 years, she was named one of 2018's "Latinos 30 Under 30" by El Mundo Boston; a 2019 New England Film Star Award finalist; a 2020 Amplify Latinx "Latina Leader" awardee; and has won grants, fellowships, and residencies from the Mayor's Office Of Arts & Culture, Boston Arts & Business Council, Boston Public Schools, and Mass MoCA.

On May 2nd, CCB will be welcoming five individuals to the virtual stage to share their victories in inter-generational healing and what that means for them as POC. These folks are artists, directors, writers, and teachers of different backgrounds.

Bundok, a Tagalog word meaning, "Mountain," here represents the inherited trauma passed down thru the generations. Mounting pressure as time goes on, from society, family, and oneself.

Just as trauma can affect families for many generations, healing can ripple through and soothe those wounds. Whether it’s a child deciding to go to therapy, or a father admitting that they have caused pain, or is in fact the one who is in pain, it’s beautiful when a family is able to find a way to push forward together. ​
