OPEN CALLS

Picture
Krik? Krak!: A call and response in some Haitian villages between a storyteller and their audience.

CCB is planning our next virtual popup exhibit, "Krik? Krak!" and we want you! All visual and performative artists are welcome to apply. Applications are due by March 27th, with all chosen artists to be notified by April 1st.

Stories have been used in various ways throughout history. There's folklore that is meant to frighten and entertain. Cautionary tales that are used to guide and teach through grizzly consequences. Other stories are used to draw out emotion and can inspire one to confront a conflict with the world or with oneself. Growth and healing can be sparked by these ancestral tales.

No matter our journeys, we all have at least one story that has left a great impact on our lives. A story that has shaped our view of the world around us and ourselves. That taught us how to tell right from wrong and keep our loved ones safe. Whether through song, paint, dance, and poetry, Creatives of Color Boston wants to share your stories!
This virtual event will include a panel on Friday, May 14th, followed by an exhibition showcase on Saturday, May 15th. Artists will be responsible for the supplies needed for the work being submitted. If you have any questions about the popup exhibit, please feel free to drop us a line at JSantos [at] CreativesOfColorBoston [dot] com.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is Krik? Krak!
The term, "Krik? Krak!" is a call and response in some Haitian villages between a storyteller and their audience. This particular open call emphasizes the storytelling component in our art. No matter our journeys, we all have at least one story that has left a great impact on our lives, and we want to hear yours!
  2. Is this a paid opportunity?
Artists who are selected for this exhibition will be paid a percentage of the proceeds from all donations received via our Eventbrite.
  3. What would I need to do for the “showcase” and “panel?”
For the showcase, we ask that the participating artists take 5 to 8 minutes to discuss their piece or perform. Visual artists can share their screens in order to show their pieces as well as to discuss it as it relates to the theme.
  4. As a performing artist, would I need to perform live or could I submit a pre-recorded piece?
We strongly prefer a pre-recorded performance as that would allow for more flexibility in troubleshooting any technical issues that may arise. However, we are also open to live virtual performances as well, and would require a sound check with the artist in advance to ensure everything goes to plan. Outside of this, the artist would be responsible for ensuring their space and technical needs are met for their performance.
  5. Is this event free?
We have a suggested donation of $5 via Eventbrite, but any amount would be much appreciated! A percentage of all donations will be paid out to all exhibiting artists, and the rest would be used to offset operational costs in running this event, as well as paying our team.
  6. Who should apply to this call for art?

If you are a BIPOC artist based in or around the Greater Boston area, this call for art is for you!
